Session - 7 - Body proportions

Typical dwarves in fantasy art, regardless of their actual height, are about 4 heads tall. The waist is lower than the half way mark and the hands and feet are exaggerated to be larger than normal to give a powerful look to the character.

Elves are often the opposite of this, generally between 9 and 10 heads tall. The limbs and body are slender with the waist higher than the half way mark giving a sense of grace.

Our brief was to put these concepts into practice and paint a concept of a dwarf and elf respectively 4 and 9 heads tall.

I am happy with how the final painting turned out. Whilst painting this concept I discovered A nice way to paint in shadows and highlights using the soft light layer filter and painting with black and white values. This technique is a lot easier for me to achieve the right shades than the method I was previously using.
