Futuristic Weapon Assignment

Finished concept
Our brief was to design a futuristic scifi projectile firing gun. I wanted to create an unusual silhouette that would still be recognisable as a gun.

Blocked in tones

I gave it an unusual circular magazine which push the bullets into the firing chamber allowing for automatic fire. It was designed as a one handed weapon but I wanted to give it a stock to help prevent recoil if used in long bursts. I am fairly happy with the result but I did not really enjoy this assignment as I am not very enthusiastic about designing a gun.

Modeling Tools and Small Props

Our second 3D assignment was to follow another lynda.com tutorial this time on modeling small game props. This turorial was all about UVs we modeled a sledge and a crowbar and UV unwraped them to give them a simple texture.

Tentacle Assignment

Finished concept
Our brief was to design and produce a colour concept piece of an imagined creature with minimum of four tentacles.

Colourised

I used several reference images to draw the figure and then blocked in tones in black and white. I added colour and then used a few multiply layers to add in the shadows. I am happy with how this piece turned out but am still not comfortable with painting in photoshop. I need to learn how to nicely blend colour into an image to create the right tones whilst avoiding hard edges where there shouldn't be.

Polygonal Modeling Techniques

Refrence with wireframe
Our first assignment was to follow a lynda.com tutorial on modeling fish. I found Maya was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I found it a lot smoother to work in than blender which I was used to after working out where to find each of the functions.

Visual Design - Session 2 - Alien Catterpillar Dude

For our second visual design session we were given the linework and tutorial from artist Arne Niklas Jannson. Our task was to add colour to the linework though overlay layers in Photoshop. We were given a basic colour palette for the block colours and then asked to paint into it.

Visual Design - Session 1

For our first visual design session we had to copy a digital painting in Photoshop. I have used Photosop a lot in the past for editing and manipulating photography images but painting in Photoshop is still a very new experience for me. During this practice I found colour selection to be extremely hard and had to manipulate the hue/saturation multiple times after starting the piece to get the colours to look more skin  like.

Manipulated hue/saturation and liquified to bring closer to the image reference
